Cells are alive! This lab shows how yeast, like all cells, carries out cellular respiration. This process uses oxygen and sugar to produce the product of carbon dioxide and water. Students analyze the gas produced using an acid/base indicator.
Use this to learn and reinforce answers to questions such as:
❑ What evidence do cells produce to show they are alive?
❑ How can you analyze the gas produced from cellular respiration?
❑ How can you demonstrate cell respiration?
Once students try this activity, they can capture their observations using the included Lab Notes or probing questions included in the instructions.
Concepts Addressed
♦ Cells produce carbon dioxide as they respire
♦ Carbon dioxide is acidic when dissolved in water
